Why Buffalo and bicycles? Fun history fact! In March 1869, George Parr of Buffalo bought the right to manufacture velocipedes under the French patent and began making them at 76 Exchange Street. Before many years numerous firms in Western New York were turning out thousands of bicycles every year, making this one of the leading centers in the country. Buffalo bicycles were shipped throughout the world. The velocipede was commonly referred to as the "boneshaker." Its rigid, wooden frame and wooden wheels with iron tires did little to soften the bumps of the usual cobblestone streets and dirt roads.
